Why Did You Choose NAPA?
One of my college baseball teammate’s family owned a couple of NAPA Auto Parts stores in Denver, Colorado, and he was the one who told me about the Executive Management Trainee Program. He knew I was interviewing for jobs in the Fort Wayne area and connected me with the General Manager, and as they say, the rest is history.
Mark’s Executive Management Trainee Journey
My trainee program experience started in the Distribution Center warehouse. I then transitioned to working the main counter, delivery driving, and working various store jobs in Fort Wayne for about 6 months. Next, I moved over to the sales part of the program. This is where I flourished, and really took an interest in growing my skillset. I learned the role of a Wholesale Manager, Sales Manager, and a plethora of other sales skills jam-packed into those 4 months. These skills are ones I still use today in my current role as General Manager of NAPA Chicago.
How The EMT Program Sets You Up for Success
Being part of the EMT program puts you on the path to not only learn, but be given more opportunities to learn and receive more training and information than a regular employee would. A new hire with the EMT program is put on the fast track and path to succeed, and this empowers managers to take a strong interest in you and your development because they know you’re the future of the company. The training, the advice from leaders, and the mentorship from the program have gotten me to where I am now.
Our Culture Differs
The biggest differences I hear from others from friends, family, and new hires always surround two things: NAPA tenure and the NAPA family. A lot of my friends who work for big businesses and corporations say that where they work, it’s not as friendly. Not everyone is helping each other out: it’s everyone for themselves to get to the top. At NAPA, it’s just not like that. No matter where in the world you are or where you go, any time you see NAPA people, it’s like seeing family for the first time in a while, and in turn I believe that’s why people stay so long.
NAPA has always given me a lot of trust, and I don’t know many companies that would trust a young man the way they’ve trusted me. They’ve given me so many different new opportunities to explore and try new innovative ways to do things. I have become a part of this culture. I’ve had a lot of other companies approach me over the years, but they have never been able to offer me anything comparable to what NAPA has given to me over the last 12 years.
Across the company, our training programs will get you where you want to be. We have so many executives who started as Delivery Drivers or in our Stockrooms that are now Division Vice Presidents because they utilized these programs that NAPA offers, and I recommend anyone who can do the same.
